A man who had recently moved into a Hollis basement apartment was found dead Monday night in his home, police said.
The unidentified 31-year-old was discovered by officers around 8 p.m. at his residence at 90th Avenue and 187th Street, according to investigators. EMS crews found that the man had trauma to his neck, police said, but the city’s medical examiner’s office had not determined a cause of death as of press time Tuesday.
Homicide detectives roamed the block the next morning and searched for clues, but no suspects were named and there were no arrests by press time.
A community resident named Collin, who has lived on the block for 27 years, said the victim had moved into the basement apartment less than a year ago and kept to himself.
“I used to see him go up and down the block all the time smoking cigarettes,” he said.
Collin added that he never saw the man meet with any friends or family or do anything suspicious. The retired father, who lives with his wife, said he had never seen any illicit activity on the block during his time living in the community.
“It’s a great neighborhood. I don’t know what’s going on here,” he said.
