Martin Luther School student crowned Miss Teen New York Latina

Evelyn Bedoya, a Junior at Martin Luther School (MLS) in Maspeth, was recently crowned Miss Teen New York Latina 2011.

A graduate of the Barbizon School of Modeling, Bedoya has been working as a model for the past two years, and the Miss Teen New York Latina was her first beauty pageant.

At Martin Luther School, Bedoya is involved in the Key Club, National Honor Society and the Student Council. She has also been a member of the Lady Cougars Tennis Team.

“We are so proud of Evelyn, not just because she won this pageant, but because she has developed into such a lovely young lady,” said MLS Principal Elizabeth Crowe. “She is the epitome of the well-rounded teen: she is a conscientious student who has found a balance between school work, friends and extracurricular activities.”

“With this position, I hope to be a major contributor to my Latino community,” Bedoya said. “I will represent New York with dignity and pride and I will do my best to be a positive inspiration to youth and adults to make this a better place.”

During the pageant, each delegate was interviewed by the judges, who learned about the contestant’s personality, culture, intellect, successes, talents, goals and ambitions. In the Fashion Wear competition, judges focused on sense of style and teen spirit, along with harmony of figure. Physical measurements and height were not considered. In the Evening Gown competition, each delegate wore a gown she chose for herself. Attention was focused on each contestant’s overall appearance, self-confidence, sense of style, beauty and grace.
