An all-girls softball league kicked off their second season with help from some elected officials at Kissena Park in Flushing on Saturday, April 16.
The Girls Organization of Athletics, Leaders in Sports (GOALS) Athletic League got into the swing of the 2011 season with New York City Comptroller John Liu and Councilmember Daniel Dromm, as both threw out first pitches for the not for profit, girl’s fast-pitch softball league.
Surrounded by close to 150 players, families and friends, Liu threw a perfect strike to Major Division catcher Megan Minihane of Broad Channel, while Dromm followed with his own strike to Minor Division catcher Lindsay Walker of Woodside.
Liu addressed the crowd and reminisced about his younger days playing in Kissena Park and was impressed by the renovation the Parks Department had done on the field. He also thanked League President Ginny Peiser for giving back to the community by creating this league. Dromm wished the players luck and thanked the parents in attendance for believing in Peiser’s dream of bringing fast-pitch softball to Queens.
Located at 59-14 69th Lane in Maspeth, GOALS Athletic League is a not-for-profit Amateur Softball Association (ASA) fast-pitch softball league for girls ages six to 14. The volunteer-run organization’s mission includes helping underprivileged and underserved girls “effectively compete for scholarship dollars available on the college level” all at a low cost.
