The new record average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in New York City has risen to $4.23 and the national average is $3.92, according to the web site NewYorkGasPrices.com.
That is $1.15 higher than a year ago and 36.9 cents per gallon higher than last month.
Our politicians have to do something and do it fast.
Our oil companies are making billions of dollars in profits. And the state and city budgets are being bolstered by increased gas tax collections at the pumps.
Perhaps we could suspend the state and federal taxes at the pumps and levy a surcharge on the oil companies who are reaping billions in extra revenues.
In the meantime, we must all attempt to conserve fuel by car pooling, planning shopping trips and shopping locally.
Try riding a bike and using those vacant bicycle lanes that dot our city streets and usurp parking spaces. Try walking to the store for the one or two items you forgot at the supermarket.
In the meantime, be sure to check our web site, qns.com, for the cheapest gasoline prices in the borough every day.
