Rotary honors solid police work

The Jamaica Rotary hailed several officers of Southern Queens as “Cops of the Month” for April for their bravery and solid police work.
At the award ceremony, the rotary club also donated over $2,500 to Alexandria Morris to go to Italy for a study abroad trip. Morris is a student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Her mother has terminal cancer.
“You touched my heart and I want to say thank you,” said Morris to the club members.
“The members were able to raise money… to give to this girl, going to this trip to make her dream come true,” said Joe Iaboni, president of the Jamaica Rotary. “That’s what the club is all about, to help people.”
On April 4, Officer Alex Nunez for the 102nd Precinct heard a broadcast over the police radio alerting of two robbery suspects. Nunez canvassed the area and found a pair who matched the description. After a brief pursuit, he apprehended both of them. One of the suspects had a series of robberies under his belt.
Three days later, Nunez saw a gray Mitsubishi SUV fitting the description of a vehicle that was part of a string of burglaries. The car appeared to be driving up and down streets to find a suitable house. Stopping the car, he discovered that one of the men was wanted for a burglary in 2010.
“Because he’s been in the precinct for a while, he knows who the bad guys are,” said Deputy Inspector for the 102nd Precinct Armando DeLeon.
Officer Steven Orlando and Sergeant Janine Shank from the 113th Precinct stopped a robbery in progress to receive the rotarian honors.
Officers Mike Ranolde and Tom Scalise from the 106th Precinct arrested a perpetrator with a loaded firearm.
