The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Asian Initiatives 2011 held another inspiring event to raise awareness and help support for cancer patients.
Tennis for Life was held at United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park on Sunday, April 24. It was co-organized by the Chinese American Tennis Society of New York (CATSNY) and deemed to be one of the biggest charitable tennis tournaments in the Asian community. The tournament featured two rising tennis stars, Hugh Jr. Mo and Douglas Mo, who both held top 25 rankings among east coast high school student-athletes.
“It means a lot to me that I can leverage my skills and give back to the society,” Hugh Jr. Mo said after the event.
Joining forces with the tennis stars were close to 100 intermediate to advanced tennis players, who were competing in doubles. The tournament raised more than $4,300 from player registration fees and donations. The funds were designated to the American Cancer Society’s effort to save lives from cancer.
Byron Yu, vice president of CATSNY, proudly said, “This is the first time that CATSNY has organized a charitable event. We want to not only take this chance to further promote tennis to the community, but also encourage everyone to join together and give back to the community.”
Other strong supporters of Tennis for Life include: USTA, Advantage Tennis, Sportime, New Yung Wah Trading Inc. and the Law Firm of Hugh H. Mo, P.C. and many anonymous donors.
The American Cancer Society, the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, has been a dedicated, cancer fighting organization for nearly a century with more than three million global volunteers working to fight the disease from a grassroots level. And events such as the Tennis for Life rally enable large communities to join the fight.
According to CATSNY, Relay for Life promises to hold even more events in the future that would allow people to do what they enjoy while doing something good for society by supporting cancer patients in many aspects. In fact, as Tennis for Life has proven to be a significant and successful milestone for 2011, two more similar tournaments have already been planned for the summer.
