Youth Jamboree welcomes 2,000 kids

Track and field has become child’s play, thanks to New York Road Runners (NYRR).

The running organization is welcoming more than 2,000 city children of all skill levels to compete in NYRR’s Youth Jamboree at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island on Sunday, May 15.

The event, free for kids and adults, comprises friendly, fun competition in a variety of track and field events including runs, relays, long jump and shot put. Complimentary t-shirts and ribbons will be awarded to all participants and a health fair will be open to all attendees.

They will also be holding the 100 meter "Fastest Kid" trials – this event is open to all 7-8 year olds in the tristate area. One boy and one girl will receive an award for "Fastest Kid" at the finals on June 11 at the adidas Grand Prix at Icahn Stadium.

Participants can pre-register online at www.nyrrf.org. For more details on the event, email the coordinators at jamboree@nyrr.org or call them at 646-758-9675. Event day registration starts at 7:45 a.m. and the races kick off at 9 a.m. for kids aged 5 to 10 and 1 p.m. for kids aged 10 to 15.

Best known for organizing the ING New York City Marathon, NYRR began providing youth programs to all city boroughs in 1998. Their running-based programs promote physical fitness in children, as well as character development and personal achievement in under-served communities.
