There are a lot of people who care about Ronald Hedrick.
The 25-year-old from the Lindenwood section of Howard Beach, who has been battling a very rare and aggressive form of liver cancer for the past three years, just made it through his fourth surgery.
And as he heads to Disney World with his cousins, his family, friends – and even complete strangers – are coming together to help him in his fight.
Hedrick’s godmother, Doreen Lombardo-Campisi, who launched and moderates the blog https://helpingronald.blogspot.com, told The Courier as they seek alternative treatment and begin to set up fundraisers, a local radio station has pledged to help by making free announcements.
Tentatively, they are setting up a dinner/dance/Chinese auction for late August, and a pancake breakfast earlier in the month.
“His records are being sent to several alternative treatment places [which is not covered by any insurance carriers],” she said.
And, as they set up a fund to offset the costs of his treatment, Lombardo-Campisi said that they are waiting on the approval of the board of a foundation and awaiting a tax ID.
“These people helping, even giving us some kind of hope is amazing,” said Hedrick’s mom Carol. “It means the world to us – there aren’t even words to describe it.”
