Douglaston Greenmarket opens

After two years of struggling, the Doug Bay Farmersmarket finally opened for business on Sunday, July 10 at 10 a.m. on both sides of the Douglaston Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) platforms.
People all across Queens are welcome to try the delicious organic food grown by people all over the New York and New Jersey area. Visitors were able to choose from a variety of goods such as fresh cheese, mushroom, organic whole grain breads, fresh beef, chicken, guinea fowl, duck, fresh fruits, vegetables, plants, fresh bakery and even fresh fish all the way from Montauk. The market’s vendors included Delaware County’s Lucky Dog Farm, Orange County’s Madura Ulster County’s Bread Alone Bakery, Mercer County’s Cherry Grove Farm, New Jersey’s DiPaola Turkeys, Suffolk County’s American Seafood Farms, Hartford County’s Newgate Farm and New Jersey’s Nolasco Farms.
Because of the recent closure of the Douglaston Market (deli), this greenmarket was a good way to finally reunite the town, and bring others to see its glory. Douglas Montgomery, the vice president of the neighborhood’s garden club, has been pushing for the market’s creation in the community for two years, and said he thought its debut ran very smoothly.
“People are coming here and shopping for 10 minutes and taking off, so the parking has not been too crowded,” he said. “But we’re getting a ton of people down here. It’s a social event for the neighborhood and the quality of the produce is amazing. It has been really wonderful.” The Douglaston Greenmarket will be open every Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4p.m. until November.
