NEWARK — A month after he was sentenced to one to two years in prison for an illegal gun charge, St. Albans native Ja Rule was penalized with more time behind bars for failing to pay his taxes in New Jersey, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
The 35-year-old rapper, whose real name is Jeffry Atkins, was sentenced to an additional 28 months in prison Monday in Newark federal court for failing to file tax returns on his income between 2004 and 2008, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Atkins pleaded guilty to charges in March and admitted to not paying the IRS more than a million dollars during that period of time when he was making more than $3 million, CNN said.
Atkins is currently serving a sentence for his plea deal in his 2007 arrest for possessing an illegal handgun.
