Man in critical condition after LIRR train hits him

FLUSHING — A Flushing man was fighting for his life after a train struck him on the tracks of the Flushing-Main Street station of the Long Island Rail Road as he tried to recover a handball that landed on the tracks Friday, MTA police said.

Mason Xu, 20, of 144-08 Sanford Ave. in Flushing, had been playing handball at a court adjacent to the track and was struck as he tried to retrieve the ball at around 6 p.m. Friday, MTA police said.

Xu is at New York Hospital Queens and listed in critical condition Tuesday after undergoing surgery for massive head trauma, Metropolitan Transportation Authority police said.

The westbound train was preparing to stop at the Flushing-Main Street station when an MTA engineer saw Xu dart out from under the platform, MTA police said.
