A Ridgewood man who hoped to live in holy matrimony with the mayor’s daughter is in Rikers Island instead after he was charged with stalking, the Queens district attorney said.
Salvatore Di Bartolo, 48, of 454 Woodward Ave. in Ridgewood, allegedly sent multiple e-mail messages professing his affection for Georgina Bloomberg, daughter of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, according to a criminal complaint from the DA’s office. Bloomberg said the two had never met.
Between May 28 and June 2, Bloomberg told police she received seven e-mail messages signed by Di Bartolo, who said he loved her, the complaint said.
In response to the complaints, an NYPD officer went to the Ridgewood man’s house June 2 and told him not to have any further contact with Bloomberg, who is a recently published novelist and professional equestrian.
But five days later, that same officer received six text messages from Di Bartolo, who asked the cop to broach the topic of marriage with the mayor and his daughter, the complaint said.
Di Bartolo insisted he and Bloomberg were going to be married despite what the officer thought, according to the DA.
He was arrested the same day.
Di Bartolo admitted to sending the missives both to Bloomberg and the officer, the DA said.
Philip Beck has known Di Bartolo since 1987 and said he frequently hung out on the stoop in front of his house.
“He was a nice guy,” Beck said.
But after Di Bartolo’s girlfriend died a few years ago, Beck said he changed.
“He acted a lot different,” Beck said. “He started selling [religious] statues on the stoop.”
Beck also said that several years ago Di Bartolo said he was going to run for mayor and even took out an ad in a local newspaper.
He also had a profile on the social networking site Facebook, which he used to comment on pictures of Georgina, also professing his love for the young socialite.
His profile stated he was the owner of a country club and resort for singles, but Beck said Di Bartolo worked at a pizza restaurant in Brooklyn.
Di Bartolo was set to be back in court this week and was charged with aggravated harassment.
