Partnership to yield affordable housing for seniors

A partnership between Sunnyside and Woodside is providing elderly residents with affordable housing for the next three and a half decades.
Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer joined the board of directors of Sunnywood Apartments (Woodysun), Sunnyside Community Services and Woodside on the Move, Inc. on August 29 to commemorate the preservation of low-cost, senior housing at Woodysun, located at 44-20 64th Street in Woodside.
“I will always fight for our seniors, many of whom are on a fixed income, and need an affordable place to call home,” said Van Bramer. “I will act on any chance I have to preserve an important asset such as Woodysun, which is a terrific place born out of a great partnership between Woodside on the Move and Sunnyside Community Services. I will continue to do all I can to preserve affordable housing, particularly for seniors.”
The councilmember championed the passage of Resolution 564, which approved an exemption for the apartment complex from paying increased property taxes. Due to collaboration with the board of Woodysun, Van Bramer was able to obtain a regulatory agreement with the city which allows the development to continue to provide reasonably priced housing for seniors for the next 35 years.
In addition to remaining affordable, numerous improvements will also be made to Woodysun, including upgraded elevators, energy efficient air conditioners, a new security system, outdoor sitting areas and 15 newly-renovated apartments.
“Councilmember Van Bramer’s assistance was invaluable in helping us move forward this financing project that will help preserve affordable housing for seniors in Woodside,” said Rosa Reyes, the executive director of Woodside on the Move, Inc. “The project is designed to upgrade the building’s interior and exterior aesthetics and will provide convenience and comfort to seniors for years to come. We are excited and look forward to working with the contractors and architect through the duration of the project. ”
