USTA renovates Astoria Park courts

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) partnered with American Express to serve up renovated tennis courts to visitors of Astoria Park.
Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr. joined USTA executive director and CEO Gordon Smith, tennis legend Chris Evert and Victoria Azarenka, the fifth ranked player in the world, to unveil three, fully restored tennis courts in Astoria Park on August 24.
The renovation was part of American Express’ second annual Fresh Courts initiative. Astoria Park was one of four parks in the county selected by the USTA and American Express.
Vallone, who learned to play tennis at Astoria Park, promotes free tennis programs across his district, providing children with access to instruction and equipment at no cost. The three, newly refurbished courts are in addition to ten courts that the councilmember found funding to renovate over the past few years.
“Each year our borough welcomes the world’s greatest tennis stars at the U.S. Open, and there’s no better way to get into the spirit than playing at Astoria Park’s new courts,” said Vallone.
