ASTORIA — Four suspects dubbed by police as the “Bleach Bandits” were scheduled to be arraigned this week after a spree of ATM burglaries across Brooklyn reached to a candy store in Astoria earlier this month.
After being arrested at their Brooklyn homes, Amaurys Hernandez, 26; Andy Lopez, 31; Roy Gonzalez, 24; and Miguel Colon, 29, each admitted to taking part in a number of 62 burglaries they said were inspired by the Ben Affleck movie “The Town,” in which they would pour bleach over ATM machines and cash drawers in delis, discount stores and pizzerias in the hopes of erasing any DNA evidence, the NYPD said.
A fifth suspect has been identified and is currently incarcerated on Riker’s Island on an unrelated case involving criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
The suspects would cut the power to the locations they were robbing and used miner’s head lamps to see what they were doing, ultimately stealing a total of $217,000 in cash, the cops said.
The last burglary took place Oct. 10, when one of the suspects removed $3,000, cigarettes and lotto tickets from a candy store at 94-08 31st Ave., according to police.
