An open letter to Borough President Helen Marshall:
You are aware of the strong community opposition to the proposed plan on the grounds of Creedmoor as put forth by the Indian Cultural and Community Center. Your representatives have attended some if not all of the meetings in the Bellerose area on this subject and can confirm that the following neighboring civic associations have strongly opposed this proposal.
These are the Creedmoor, Bellerose Hillside, Rocky Hill, North Bellerose, Queens Colony and Bellerose Commonwealth civic associations, to name a few.
Our opposition to this plan has been reported extensively in the Little Neck Ledger. The original intent was to have a one-story building with an athletic field and parking for members of the ICCC. It now has metamorphosed into a two nine-story-tower, high-rise residential development — the plans of which seem to change daily — and which currently violates the zoning laws of the area.
All of our other local elected officials — City Councilman Mark Weprin (D-Oakland Gardens), state Assemblyman David Weprin (D-Little Neck) and state Senator Tony Avella (D-Bayside) — have publicly opposed this plan. I am urging you, as our borough representative, to voice your position in this matter, as it affects a large number of your constituents and all the civic associations’ membership in the area.
Recalling the excellent and thoughtful planning your predecessor, Claire Shulman, had for the grounds of Creedmoor, I am requesting that you oppose this latest ICCC proposal. The above civic associations believe it would set a dangerous precedent and change the character of one of the city’s last single-family residential neighborhoods in Queens.
