A robbery and carjacking came to a fatal end early Thursday morning when a young Middle Village man was shot and killed by an off-duty NYPD officer.
Police said that around 2:45 a.m., 22-year-old Christopher Kissane of 73-06 68th Road attempted an armed robbery somewhere in Queens. He then attempted an unsuccessful carjacking, firing a shot and striking the motorist’s vehicle as he drove away, police said.
A second attempt proved successful, according to police, as Kissane carjacked a 2001 Chrysler minivan at gunpoint about an hour later around 4 a.m. near the corner of 90th Road and 80th Street in Woodhaven.
Kissane then drove about a mile to the intersection of Cypress Hill Street and Jamaica Avenue, where an off-duty NYPD lieutenant driving in his personal vehicle saw the minivan strike a divider and light pole, police said.
Kissane got out of the vehicle and traveled eastbound on Jamaica avenue toward Hemlock street, where he fired at the officer, who returned fire and hit Kissane, according to police. Kissane was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced DOA, police said. Police found an unregistered nine-shot .22 caliber revolver with four bullets remaining in the cylinder and a plastic bag containing 15 additional rounds at the scene.
The lieutenant was treated at Jamaica Hospital for trauma.
