Thruway Authority and State Police Troop T “Drunk Driving” Initiative
ALBANY, NY (01/30/2012)(readMedia)– The New York State Thruway Authority and the New York State Police Troop T announced a “Drunk Driving” initiative for the 46th annual edition of this year’s Super Bowl on Sunday, February 5, 2012. The four-day awareness campaign will begin Friday, February 3, and continue through Monday, February 6, 2012.
“Super Sunday is one of the most dangerous days to be on the road because many impaired people attempt to drive home after the party,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Thomas J. Madison. “Don’t mix alcohol and driving – always have a designated driver in your starting line-up.”
New York State Police Troop T, whose members patrol the Thruway exclusively, will be out in full force keeping a close watch for drunk drivers. “Troop T is committed to making the Thruway safe,” said Troop T Commander Major Robert C. Meyers. “Our goal is to maximize DWI enforcement efforts to ensure that motorists are not needlessly injured or killed by an intoxicated or drug impaired drive during this time.”
Ten saturation patrols are scheduled to be conducted statewide by State Police Troop T during the Super Bowl Weekend.
“This Sunday’s celebrations could end in tragedy if people drink alcohol and drive. We encourage all New Yorkers to be proactive and do their part to prevent these unnecessary tragedies,” said Madison. “The Thruway is pleased to again partner with State Police Troop T to help prevent motorists from being injured or killed in an alcohol-related accident,” continued Madison.
During February 4 – 6, 2011, as part of the “Drunk Driving” initiative, State Police Troop T issued 1,314 tickets and made 30 DWI arrests.
