After 20 months as commander of the 111th Precinct, former Captain Ronald Leyson, promoted to Deputy Inspector and transferred to the 110th Precinct, stopped by the 111th’s Precinct Council meeting to say goodbye.
“I thank you for everything for the past 20 months,” said Leyson. “We couldn’t have had the success that we had without the partnership with the community. I appreciate that relationship, that trust that was built.”
Leyson also took the opportunity to introduce the precinct’s new captain, Jason Huerta.
“If I had to handpick and hand select anybody to take over for me, for my family here at the 111th Precinct, it would be Jason Huerta,” said Leyson. “I can tell you unequivocally that he is the best choice as the commanding officer. They did it right this time.”
Huerta, who has spent 21 years in the police department, also touched on the partnership with the community.
“You guys are our eyes and ears out there; it makes our job a lot easier when we have your support and your information.”
Leyson ended his goodbye by reflecting on the time at the precinct.
“Fortunately, for the vast majority of the time, we had a really good run,” said Leyson. “I’m sure our paths will cross again.”
Also at the meeting was Lieutenant John Errico from the Fire Safety Education Unit. Errico provided tips on how to prevent fires at home. He also stressed the need to have a plan in case of fire, as well as having a working smoke detector.
“In our school system, we have never had a fire death,” Errico said. “Kids at school know where to go. But if you ask them if they have a plan at home, they’ll look at you and say, ‘No, I don’t think so.’”
