Amina Abdelaziz, a senior at St. John’s Preparatory School in Astoria, was recently named by the Horatio Alger Association as a recipient of the 2012 Horatio Alger New York Scholars award. Bearing the name of the 19th century American author, the Horatio Alger Association is a non-profit group that offers scholarships for select students to pursue their individual versions of the American dream. Members of the association mentor scholarship recipients and emphasize hard work, honesty and determination when facing challenges. Scholarship winners must also demonstrate a commitment to serving those less fortunate than themselves.
