Recycling Is Theme for Poster Contest

State Sen. Invites Children To Participate

To celebrate Earth Day this year, State Sen. Michael Gianaris is inviting elementary school students in his western Queens district to participate in the Earth Day Competition 2012.

This poster contest gives children the opportunity to illustrate the importance of improving our environment, according to Gianaris. The theme for this year’s Earth Day contest is “Reduce, Reuse. Recycle.”

“As we continue to recognize our impact on the environment, we must ensure the next generation understands the importance of recycling and waste reduction,” Gianaris said. “It is critical that children understand the importance of improving our environment, and this competition is a fun, educational way for them to get involved. I encourage students to participate and look forward to seeing their creative submissions.”

Gianaris is an advocate for environmental improvement, having authored the Clean Energy Act and other legislative proposals to better protect and conserve our environment. This competition is an effort to increase awareness of the people’s responsibility to be greener and more eco-friendly.

All submissions will be displayed on Gianaris’ website, with the winning poster as the featured piece. Participants will also receive a special certificate from Gianaris for completing the project.

Earth Day is Apr. 22. Students’ submissions to the competition are due by Mar. 9. For additional information, call Gianaris’ office at 1-718-728-0960.
