Teen Bandit’s Fatal Mistake

Killed Trying To Rob Off-Duty Det.

An off-duty detective fatally shot one of the two teenage bandits who assaulted and tried to rob him on a Bushwick street late on Sunday night, Jan. 29, police reported.

Law enforcement sources said 17- year-old Antwain White of Vernon Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant was shot after he and his 15-year-old male accomplice attempted to mug the detective on Grove Street near Goodwin Place at around 11:50 p.m. Sunday evening.

White was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later from his injuries. The 15-year-old bandit was taken into custody by police early on Monday, Jan. 30; his identity was withheld due to his age.

According to authorities, the 50- year-old off-duty detective was walking along Grove Street while en route to the Gates Avenue J train station when he was approached by White and the 15-year-old robber.

Police said the 15-year-old grabbed the detective by the arm and simulated that he had a gun while White struck the officer in the head with a cane.

Reportedly, the detective managed to pull out his shield and an offduty, .38-cal. handgun and identified himself as a police officer.

Though he ordered White to stop, law enforcement sources noted, the suspect allegedly continued to advance toward the officer. The detective then opened fire, with the shot striking White in the left forearm and then exiting into his torso.

Members of the 83rd Precinct responded to the scene along with EMS units. White was transported by paramedics to Woodhull Hospital Center, where he later died.

An investigation is ongoing.
