Assists Clients With Filing, Disputes
The Queens Legal Services Corporation has received an $85,000 matching grant from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to provide low-income taxpayer clinics this year.
The Jamaica-based firm was one of a number of groups to receive grants totaling over $9 million across New York State, according to the IRS.
Low-income taxpayer clinics are organizations which represent lowincome taxpayers in federal tax controversies with the IRS for free or a nominal-charge. They also provide tax education and outreach for taxpayers who speak English as a second language.
Through the program, the IRS awards matching grants of up to $100,000 a year to qualifying organizations. For the 2012 grant cycle, the IRS awarded grants to 156 groups.
The initiative is a fedearl program administered by the Taxpayer Advocate Service, led by National Taxpayer Advocate Nina E. Olson. Clinics and their employees and volunteers, however, operate independently of the federal government.
