The first graduates of the Queens County Veterans Court were celebrated by New York State judges and Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown on Monday, Mar. 12, in Kew Gardens. As noted, the veterans court is an alternative to incarceration program in which non-violent veteran offenders are provided with specialized support services and treatment and an exchange of information between legal, clinical and community resources. Five members of the court graduated on Monday, and nearly 40 veterans have been diverted from jail through the veterans court since December 2010. Shown with Brown (at center) at the graduation ceremony are (from left to right) Sol Wachtler, former New York State chief judge and current professor of constitutional law at Touro Law School; Judge Marcia P. Hirsch, presiding judge of the Queens Veterans Court; Justice Judy Harris Kluger, chief of policy and planning for New York State Courts and Justice Fernando M. Camacho, administrative judge of the criminal term of Queens Supreme Court.
