Former Lady Royals Make U.S. Womens Hoops Team
Two graduates from Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village have been named to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team which will compete at the London games this summer.
Sue Bird of the Class of 1998 and Tina Charles of the Class of 2006 represent the second and third Christ the King alumnni to be named to the squad. Chamique Holdsclaw of the Class of 2000 was the first Olympian from the Midville school.
This will be Bird’s third go-round on the national team, following appearances in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Gamers.
While at Christ the King, Bird was the MVP of the 1998 New York state tournament, and also led her squad to a 27-0 record and the USA Today national crown. Bird was also named to the 1998 Parade Magazine All-America first team and the USA Today All-USA second team. She will be playing guard and wearing #6.
Charles compiled 1,750 points, 1,224 rebounds, 440 assists and 432 blocked shots in three varsity seasons at Christ the King and led her team to a pair of USA Today No. 1 final national rankings and state titles in 2005 and 2006 to go with a two-year 57-0 record. Charles was named the 2006 National High School Player of theYear by USA Today, McDonald’s, Parade Magazine, Gatorade and SI.com. She will be playing center and wearing #14.
