Lend a Hand and Love a Neighbor

Community Cleanup Day In Glendale, R’Wood

Glendale and Ridgewood residents will mark Earth Day weekend in a special way with aLove Your Neighbor Day” community-wide cleanup scheduled to take place rain or shine this Saturday, Apr. 21.

Sponsored by the Glendale Civic Association (GCA), the event will take place from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. and includes organized cleanups of public gardens, sidewalks and railroad sitings by teams of volunteers.

Those who cannot participate in the group efforts are urged to get out of their homes and do a little spring cleaning of their own on their own block during those hours on Saturday, such as sweeping their sidewalks or sprucing up a neighbor’s front yard.

“The idea is to come out of your house and help your neighbor sweep up,” said Kathy Masi, GCA president and one of the event’s organizers. She noted that she was inspired by the neighbors on her Glendale block, who pitch in from time to time to help other residents keep up their appearances, to organize the community wide cleanup.

Masi and a group of volunteers will gather in front of Chili’s restaurant at the Shops at Atlas Park, located on Cooper Avenue and 80th Street, at 9:45 a.m. The group will then work on cleaning up the sidewalk on Cooper Avenue between 80th Street and Metropolitan Avenue, adjacent to St. John Cemetery.

All volunteers in the group project are encouraged to bring their own broom and gloves.

Group cleanups will also be held at other locations in Ridgewood and Glendale during the same time period this Saturday, including at the Glendale farm garden on 88th Street at 74th Avenue and along the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) right-ofway on Edsall Avenue and 71st Street.

Ridgewood locations where community cleanups will take place include the LIRR right-of-way on Shaler Avenue and 65th Street and Grover Cleveland Park, at the corner of Stanhope Street and Grandview Avenue.

Numerous corporate sponsors have signed on to support the groups of volunteers as well as various civic organizations including the Ridgewood Glendale-Middle Village Lions Club, the Kiwanis Club of Glendale, the Glendale Property Owners Association, the Farmers Oval Civic Association and Citizens for a Better Ridgewood.
