Rockaway Residents Help Choose Budget Priorities

Select Projects For Funds In Pilot Pgm.

City Council Member Eric A. Ulrich was joined by local residents and representatives of the Participatory Budgeting Project and Community Voices Heard to announce the results of his pilot Participatory Budgeting project in the 32nd Council District.

Residents of Broad Channel and the Rockaways cast their votes between Mar. 25 and 31 in a pilot project to decide how $1 million in capital funds will be spent in the district for Fiscal Year 2013.

Ulrich announced that nine projects, totaling $1,372,000, will be funded this year as a result of the vote, in which 1,639 residents of Broad Channel and the Rockaways took part. The projects include upgrades and improvements to schools, libraries, parks, community facilities, and equipment for volunteer fire departments and the NYPD.

Among the projects funded are:

– $230,000 for Technology Upgrades in three local schools: P.S. 47 in Broad Channel, P.S. 317/M.S. 318 in Rockaway Park and P.S. 114 in Belle Harbor;

– $147,000 for equipment for volunteer fire departments in Breezy Point, Broad Channel, Rockaway Point, and Roxbury;

– $45,000 for renovation to provide access for the disabled at the American Legion/Knights of Columbus in Rockaway;

– $150,000 to the Department of Parks and Recreation for the construction of an outdoor performance space on Shore Front Parkway in Rockaway Beach;

– $100,000 to the New York City Police Department for the installation of Argus security cameras in the 100th Precinct in Rockaway; and

– $700,000 to the Queens Public Library for renovations to the Peninsula library branch in Rockaway Beach, and for the installation of an automated library branch/book vending machine in Breezy Point, the first of its kind in New York City.

More than 2,000 community residents took part in the public process, which began in August 2011 and culminated in the public vote.
