Dromm Honors Immigrant Leaders

At a ceremony held on Monday, Apr. 16 at Elmhurst Hospital Center, City Council Member Daniel Dromm honored immigrant New Yorkers that have made outstanding contributions to their communities. The event took place on the eve of the ninth annual Immigrant Heritage Week Celebration sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. Joining Dromm (from left to right) were award-winning poet Sweta Srivastava Viikram, guitarist Francisco Rolda’n; award recipients Vasantrai M. Gandhi, a former chairperson of Community Board 3; Sandra Giraldo, assistant director for patient relations at Elmhurst Hospital Center; La Fuente community organizer Teresa Arieta; Narbada Chhetri, a senior community organizer for Adhikaar, a nonprofit working with Nepali-speaking communities; DRUM Executive Director Monami Maulik; Make the Road LGBTQ Justice Project organizer Jesus D. Puerto; City Coffee owners Lyla and Jorge Alvarado; as well as Fatima Shama, commissioner of the Mayor’s Office Of Immigrant Affairs.
