Congress Debate Tonight

Times Co-Sponsors Showdown In Middle Village

Less than two weeks before their June 26 primary, the Democratic candidates for the new Sixth Congressional District seat will go head-to-head in a debate co-sponsored by the Times Newsweekly, the New York Daily News and the Juniper Park Civic Association (JPCA) in Middle Village tonight, Thursday, June 14.

All are invited to participate in the session, which will begin at 7:45 p.m. in the auditorium of Our Lady of Hope School, located at the corner of Eliot Avenue and 71st Street.

The four candidates on the Democratic primary ballot-City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley of Glendale, Assemblyman Rory Lancman of Hillcrest, Assemblywoman Grace Meng of Flushing and physician Robert Mittman of Bayside-have been invited to participate in the debate.

Questions will be asked of the candidates by a panel of reporters including the Times Newsweekly’s Sam Goldman, NY1’s CeFaan Kim and Capital New York’s Azi Paybarah. Lisa Colangelo of the Daily News will serve as moderator.

Audience members will also have the opportunity to submit their own questions for the Congressional hopefuls prior to the start of the debate tonight. Time permitting, a number of those questions will be asked of the candidates, as determined by a review panel.

Crowley, Lancman, Meng and Mittman will square off in a June 26 primary for the Democratic nomination for the Sixth Congressional District seat, which is entirely located within Queens and includes parts of Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth, Middle Village, Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens and Rego Park. The new district spans areas currently within districts represented by Rep. Gary Ackerman, who is retiring at the end of this term, and Rep. Bob Turner, who is running for U.S. Senate.

The winner of the June 26 primary will face the presumptive Republican nominee for the Sixth Congressional District seat, City Council Member Daniel Halloran of Bayside, in the November general election.
