The city Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to make Brinckerhoff Cemetery a landmark in a move that will protect the historic Fresh Meadows burial ground from development.
The cemetery, on 182nd Street between 69th and 73rd avenues, dates back to the colonial era and some of Queens’ earliest settlers are buried there. The community has been calling on the commission to give Brinckerhoff landmark status for 12 years.
The designation brings the cemetery wider recognition as a historic site and makes it eligible for additional funding for its upkeep.
