Police slapped the cuffs on a homeless man who allegedly pushed a female officer down a flight of stairs while resisting arrest at the Gates Avenue J/Z train station in Bushwick last Friday, Sept. 7, it was reported.

Michael Ellison

Law enforcement sources said 25-year-old Michael Ellison was apprehended the day after the incident in which the officer suffered two broken ankles and other injuries.

Authorities said the trouble began at around 10:50 a.m. last Friday at the elevated subway stop located above the intersection of Gates Avenue and Broadway.

Members of the NYPD Transit District 33 Anti-Crime Division were on patrol at the station when they observed Ellison allegedly attempting to swipe a student MetroCard through the turnstile.

When the officers approached him and attempted to place him under arrest, authorities said, the suspect physically resisted. In the process, he reportedly knocked a female officer down a staircase.

Ellison managed to escape capture and fled from the subway station.

The injured officer was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center where she was treated for two broken ankles and a laceration to the head which required 10 stitches to close. She is expected to make a recovery.

Police said Ellison was apprehended last Saturday, Sept. 8, and charged with assaulting a police officer, second-degree assault, resisting arrest, criminal trespassing and harassment.

According to court records, he was arraigned in Kings County Criminal Court on Sunday, Sept. 9, and ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation while being held without bail. He is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 9.
