Selfhelp Event At Kissena Park
Selfhelp Community Services Inc.’s first Annual Walk-A-Thon will be held on Friday, Oct. 26, at Kissena Park in Flushing, it was announced.
The event, organized by Selfhelp’s Senior Communities, is a fundraiser to support the increase in the demand for health and wellness programs offered at Selfhelp’s five senior centers that serve an average of 6,000 senior citizens throughout Queens.
“Health and wellness programs offered at Selfhelp’s senior centers have burgeoned over a decade, and funding is stretched to the limit,” said Priscilla Maysonet, managing director of senior communities at Selfhelp. “Program offerings range from Tai Chi, dancing, and Yoga to Walking Club and fitness class. These ac- tivities have become essential for our seniors’ physical and mental wellbeing, and as people live longer and Baby Boomers become Senior Boomers the demand is on the upswing.”
The walk-a-thon has been organized to raise funds to afford the existing and expanded program offerings for seniors.
The event provides the opportunity for individuals to sponsor participating members or one of the senior centers, donate funds, or participate in the walk.
The event will take place on Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Kissena Corridor Park in Flushing (enter at Oak Avenue and 163rd Street).
According to Maysonet, rallying with the senior citizens, joining the walk-a-thon, or donating to the event will mean a healthier life for many elderly people who depend on the services addressing health needs and preventive practices.
