St. John’s fencers meet President Obama

All Team USA members of the 2012 Olympic Games gathered at the White House last week to meet President Barack Obama, including St. John’s fencers Daryl Homer and Dagmara Wozniak.

“I’m unbelievably grateful to have met President Obama,” Homer said. “This is a memory I will always cherish.”

Homer, 22, placed sixth in men’s saber. It was his first Olympic Games. He matched alumnus Keeth Smart’s career-best Olympic finish and hit the highest place mark for an American since Peter Westbrook earned a bronze medal in 1984.

Wozniak placed eighth in women’s saber after being seeded 10th.

“It was an amazing day,” Wozniak said. “Meeting the president and being able to take a tour of the White House is something I’ll never forget.”
