Road Work

Because of ongoing construction work at several locations throughout Queens and Brooklyn, the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced numerous street closures in local neighborhoods for the upcoming week.

The announced diversions are current as of Wednesday, Sept. 5. The DOT may shut down other roads should the need for emergency repairs arise.

Streets and highways that are affected by closures during this week include the following:

Repaving In Corona, Sunnyside, W’side.

Weather permitting, DOT crews will conduct street resurfacing along the following roadways:

– 32nd Street between Newtown Road and Broadway in Astoria for paving on Thursday, Sept. 6, and Friday, Sept. 7;

– 43rd Avenue between 32nd Place and 39th Avenue in Long Island City and Sunnyside for milling on Thursday, Sept. 6 and Friday, Sept. 7;

– 43rd Avenue between 69th and 74th streets in Woodside for milling on Thursday, Sept. 6 and Friday, Sept. 7;

– 44th Avenue between 69th and 74th streets in Woodside for milling on Friday, Sept. 7;

– 48th Street between Skillman Avenue and Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside and Woodside for paving on Friday, Sept. 7;

– 55th Avenue between 98th and 99th streets in Corona for milling on Friday, Sept. 7; and

– Calloway Street between 57th Avenue and Horace Harding Expressway in Corona for milling on Thursday, Sept. 6 and Friday, Sept. 7.

More Lane Closures On J. Rob. Pkwy.

One westbound lane of the Jackie Robinson Parkway will be closed in the area of Myrtle Avenue on weeknights, Monday through Friday, from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. through Friday, Sept. 14, as the DOT conducts removal and replacement of the under deck timber shielding of an underpass.

Concrete Work On Cross Bay Bridge

One lane will be closed in each direction most Saturdays at the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge for work related to the $17 million project to rehabilitate the concrete piers beneath the bridge.

The Saturday lane closures will take place between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. and continue through November. One lane in each direction had previously been closed on weekdays, between 7 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. to accommodate equipment being used as part of the repair work, and will continue through November as well.

Currently, two northbound lanes into Broad Channel are closed Monday through Thursday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and on Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. while heavy cranes, fitted with 4-to-6-foot wide stabilizing bars, are used to lower materials to the work area near the bridge’s north abutment.

The entire project, which includes excising and repairing damaged concrete and shoring up materials that protect the bridge’s concrete abutment, is expected to be completed in November 2013.

Guardrail Work On Cross Bay Boulevard

One to two southbound lanes of Cross Bay Boulevard will be closed between the Joseph P. Addabbo Bridge and East First Road in Broad Channel on weekdays from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. as the DOT installs new guardrails. Bicycle access within the area will be provided throughout the project.

Lane Closure On Union Turnpike

The right lane of the eastbound service road of Union Turnpike between 128th and 134th streets in Kew Gardens will be closed until further notice as part of the state DOT’s ongoing reconstruction of the Kew Gardens interchange. All existing travel lanes remain open and were shifted to the left.

Lane Closures On Grand Central Pkwy.

One lane of the Grand Central Parkway will be closed in either direction under the 37th Street overpass on Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Closures will also occur on weekends from 11 p.m. Fridays until 6 a.m. Saturdays and on Sundays from 12:01 to 11 a.m.

Additionally, one lane in each direction of the Grand Central Parkway will be closed between 82nd and 111th streets on weekdays from 12:01 a.m. until 5 a.m., on Saturdays from 1 to 6 a.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 9 a.m. as the DOT conducts maintenance work.

Furthermore, one lane in each direction will be closed on the 44th Street overpass above the Grand Central Parkway in Astoria through February as the DOT conducts bridge repair work.

It was also noted that one lane in each direction of the Grand Central Parkway may be closed under the United Nations Avenue Bridges (between Roosevelt Avenue and the Long Island Expressway) weekdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and again from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. The closures will also take place on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and from 10 p.m. Saturdays until 3 p.m. Sundays.
