The Bricklayers & Allied Craft workers, Local Union 1, is conducting a recruitment through June 28, 2013 for three stonemason apprentices; 10 pointer, caulker and cleaner apprentices; 10 bricklayer and mason apprentices; and three plasterer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced.
Applications will only be given on the last Friday of each month during the recruitment period, except in December, when they will be given on the third Friday. Applications will be filled out at: International Masonry Institute Local Union 1 Training Facility, located at 12-07 44th Ave. in Long Island City, from 8 to 8:30 a.m. during recruitment period, on the following dates: Oct. 26, Nov. 30, Dec. 21, Jan. 25, 2013, Feb. 22, Mar. 29, Apr. 26, May 31 and June 28.
There will be no mailed applications. Doors open at 8 a.m. There will be no admittance after 8:30 a.m. Processing will be held until 10 a.m.
The committee requires that applicants:
– Must be at least 18 years old- proof required at the time of selection (birth certificate, state-issued driver’s license, any state or federal ID showing date of birth).
– Must have at least 10th grade education.
– Must possess sufficient reading and math comprehension skills to satisfactorily complete on-the-job training and related technical instruction, as determined by an exam given with applications.
– Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of the individual or others, as determined in interview and pre-employment program.
– Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by signed “Affidavit for Physical Performance” form.
Required work includes:
– Performing all phases of work in the construction industry. This includes working with hand tools & power tools, and being exposed to loud noise, hazardous machinery, hazardous voltages and respiratory irritants.
– Prolonged standing, climbing, walking and repeated squatting, stretching and bending.
– Working under extreme temper beginning atures, ranging from 0 degrees (outside work in the winter) to extreme heat in summer. Additionally, everyday work may be at such temperatures and in confined areas where movement is greatly limited.
– Lifting and moving heavy supplies and equipment up to 100 pounds, and working from ladders, scaffolds and personnel lifts that may exceed 100 feet.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.
