Nobel Peace Prize winner Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, a political activist from Burma who was recently released from prison, was welcomed to Queens College in Flushing during an event on Sept. 22 hosted by the college and led by Rep. Joseph Crowley. Kyi, who recently received the Congressional Gold Medal, was hailed by Crowley as helping to inspire “the people of Burma-and people around the world-to stand up for human rights, democracy and freedom.” The event featured a reading of Kyi’s essay “Freedom From Fear” by actress Anjelica Huston, a presentation of a City Council proclamation by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and a performance of the song “You’ve Got a Friend” by singer Carole King. Pictured with Kyi (second from left) are Crowley, Queens College President James Muyskens, King, Quinn and Huston.
