JAMAICA — A customs officer allegedly found 2 pounds of heroin earlier this month in the luggage of a Bronx resident coming into John F. Kennedy International Airport from the Dominican Republic, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection New York field office said.
The officer allegedly discovered the heroin through a baggage examination of Andy Diaz’s luggage, the office said. The heroin, estimated to have a street value of about $65,000, was sewn into several jeans, the office said.
The officer had found the heroin after realizing the jeans were thick and heavy, the office said.
Diaz is in custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations on charges of federal narcotics smuggling, the office said.
“This seizure demonstrates that drug smugglers will go to any extreme to get their product into the United States,” Robert Perez, director of New York field operations, said in a statement. “CBP officers are on the forefront of preventing that from occurring.”
