Glendale Garden Accepting Leaves

Collecting This Month For Compost

Instead of throwing bagfuls of leaves in the trash, residents are asked to bring them to the Glendale Community Garden this month as part of a project aimed at creating compost for the greenspace.

As announced, the bags of fallen foliage can be dropped off at the garden, located at 74-10 88th St., over the next three Saturdays-Nov. 3, 10 and 17-anytime from 9 a.m. until noon each day.

The collection is part of “Project Leaf Drop Off,” organized by the NYC Compost Project-Local Organics Recovery Program based in Astoria and sponsored locally by the Kiwanis Club of Glendale and the Glendale Property Owners Association.

Previously, the city’s Sanitation Department used to hold special leaf recycling collections during the fall months, but the program was halted as a result of recent budget cuts. It was noted that the special collection event in Glendale gives residents the opportunity to have the leaves reused naturally in the creation of compost to help grow new plants in the garden for months and years to come.

Residents who plan on participating in the drop-off program should place the fallen leaves in brown paper bags. Leaves within black, blue or white plastic bags will not be accepted.

The sponsors also advise residents to remove any sharp branches, twigs or other clippings from the leaves before bringing them to the garden.
