News From The Queens Tourism Council
Borough activities enter the sublime this week with a Spartan contest, a running race on a JFK airplane runway, an insect-inspired dance, a swap meet, a Christian comedy show and a talk on women’s rights in Afghanistan.
However, there are other, more common endeavors, such as Irish pipes, a children’s carnival, a jazz tribute concert and a puppet show.

– Tonight (Thursday), Apr. 11, Milka Djordjevich in Kinetic Makeover, 8 p.m. (repeats every night until Saturday, Apr. 13). Milka Djordjevich’s Kinetic Makeover is a dance solo giving power and autonomy to one body. This body attempts to produce multiple images, ideas and content so that the viewer is not just watching a dance, but witnessing multiple transformations. $15. – Friday, Apr. 12, Tango Lovers, 4 p.m. (and Saturday, Apr. 13, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.). An ensemble of acclaimed dancers, musicians and singers present a unique and extraordinary show conveying an array of emotions via tango. $48. – Friday, Apr. 12, Mieko Anekawa Solo Exhibition Opening, 7 p.m. An evening featuring live painting by artist Mieko Anekawa, a performance by Hito+ and Water Brain and a collaborative art installation with Ikebana artist Akiyo Sano. – Saturday, Apr. 13, Spartan Race, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Forget trail races, mud runs and warrior dashes, it’s time for the brutal Spartan Race obstaclecourse. Waves of 200 athletes will be released every 15 minutes. The sound system will be pumping while the big video boards show live shots from the event. $135 registration fee. – Saturday, Apr. 13, The Living Irish Legacy: Mickey Dunne and Oliver O’Connell with Guitarist John Coyne, 7:30 p.m. Direct from Ireland are two musical treasures. Oliver O’Connell has written a book on the lives of traveling musicians and has recently written songs and music. Mickey Dunne’s piping embodies the free-flowing, traveler-piping style. – Saturday, Apr. 13, Children’s Carnival, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (repeats every Saturday and Sunday until Apr. 21). Join the only working historical farm in the city for a carnival in the apple orchard.
