An attack on a 16-year-old in an alley, leaving her seriously injured, has left the “peaceful” Astoria community in shock.

“It’s totally unexpected. There’s never real concern walking around here,” said John Katsetos, 25. “It makes you think twice about going in the alleys to take shortcuts.”

On Tuesday, April 9 at around 10:45 p.m. the victim walked into an alley next to 22-63 43rd Street with the suspect who later assaulted her and then fled the scene, said police.

The teen was taken to Elmhurst General Hospital with head injuries and is listed in critical, but stable condition.

According to published reports, a brick may have been used in the attack.

“It’s not pleasant to hear that happened. It’s very strange because this is a peaceful neighborhood,” said a resident, who asked to remain anonymous, and whose three-year-old son attends a daycare down the block from the scene.

“Now people can’t walk alone anymore,” said Ena Loor,78, who frequently visits her niece who lives in the area. “This shouldn’t happen. I’m afraid to walk by myself.”

Police describe the suspect as a black man in his mid-twenties, 6 feet tall and wearing a dark jacket, white T-shirt, blue jeans, black sneakers and dark gloves.

Anyone with information in regards to this assault is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at  or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
