Queens Director of Community Boards Barry Grodenchik announced Tuesday he would drop out of the race for borough president.

“The next borough president must focus like a laser on jobs, education, health care, economic development and [Hurricane] Sandy recovery. I am proud to have brought those issues to the forefront of the debate, but at this time believe that it is in the best interest of my family, team and party to end my candidacy,” he said in a statement.

The announcement came a day after the Queens Democratic organization endorsed former state Assemblywoman Melinda Katz for the spot.

Grodenchik was competing in a crowded Democratic field that still includes state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside), City Councilman Leroy Comrie (D-St. Albans), Sen. Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst) and Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Astoria).
