Old Glory Was Front and Center at Local Memorial Day Events

The Star-Spangled Banner was flown proudly at Memorial Day parades and ceremonies held around the Times Newsweekly’s coverage area throughout the weekend. As shown in photo 1, local scout troops and sea cadets marched along Myrtle Avenue on Monday, May 27, during the 75th annual Ridgewood-Glendale Memorial Day Parade held by the Allied Veterans of Ridgewood and Glendale Memorial Committee. Girl Scouts from Troop 4378 were all smiles at the Maspeth Memorial Day Parade on Sunday, May 26 (photo 2), while ROTC members marched with purpose during the event held by the United Veterans and Fraternal Organizations of Maspeth (photo 3). The Franklin K. Lane High School Junior ROTC displayed the colors during Monday’s memorial service in Woodhaven at the Garden of Remembrance in front of American Legion Post 118 (photo 4). As shown, crosses bearing the names of local veterans who died were planted on the lawn in tribute to their service. Members of St. Sebastian’s Catholic War Veterans Post 870 saluted the fallen during a ceremony at the Doughboy World War I monument held at the conclusion of the post’s Memorial Day Parade on Monday (photo 5). Cub Scouts from Pack 349 at Our Lady of Mercy School in Forest Hills were proud to participate in Sunday’s Forest Hills Memorial Day Parade (photo 6), which was organized by the American Legion Continental Post 1424. Boy Scouts and other volunteers came to Cypress Hills National Cemetery last Saturday, May 25, to plant flags at the monuments of fallen veterans (photo 7). Finally, members of St. Margaret Catholic War Veterans Post 1172 remembered the fallen at their ceremony at the Middle Village Veterans Triangle on Monday.
