NORTH HILLS, L.I. — A Woodside man was arrested last week after he allegedly drove 100 mph on the Long Island Expressway while intoxicated and ignored police who tried to pull him over, Nassau County police said.
According to police, on July 6 around 5 a.m., a Highway Patrol Bureau police officer was east on the Long Island Expressway near Exit 40 when he saw a 2002 Kia pass him at about 100 mph.
Nassau police said Woodside resident Royce Quigua, 38 changed lanes, cutting off the police vehicle and crossing over the HOV lane divider. Quigua continued to operate the vehicle in an erratic manner by making multiple lane changes without signaling before exiting the expressway and allegedly refusing to pull over. Police said he was spotted passing through several steady red traffic signal lights and allegedly failed to signal lane changes and followed vehicles too closely, while driving in excess of posted speed limits.
Quigua then re-entered the expressway on the west side, and was eventually stopped at Exit 36 after several Highway Patrol Bureau units caught up with him, Nassau cops said.
Police said Quigua was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, and he was taken into custody while his vehicle was impounded.
Quigua was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, unlawful fleeing of a police officer, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated, Nassau police said.
He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead, L.I., July 7 and ordered held on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond, according to authorities.
