OZONE PARK — An Ozone Park woman has been charged with murder after she allegedly drove into traffic with her husband clinging to the roof of her SUV, resulting in his death, police said.
Maria Espinosa and her husband, Matthew Soria, had gotten into a dispute over money and the keys to the vehicle, according to the New York Post.
Soria, 34, had attempted to stop his 51-year-old wife from driving off, but she pushed him away and Soria then climbed onto the roof of the car, police said.
Police said Espinosa proceeded to drive westbound on Jamaica Avenue with Soria gripping on. She allegedly reached speeds of up to 80 mph, according to the NYPD. Police said she made a U-turn and after driving a few blocks, crashed into a second car, causing Soria to fall onto the hood of the car and pinning him.
Soria suffered head trauma and was pronounced dead on arrival at Brookdale Hospital, police said. The passengers in the second car suffered minor injuries and were brought to the hospital, where they were treated and then released.
Espinosa was taken into police custody. She was later arrested and charged with murder, manslaughter and assault, police said.
According to the Post report, Espinosa had previously filed a domestic-violence complaint against her husband in 2005. He was previously convicted of larceny and had just gotten off probation for forcing a 15-year-old to perform oral sex on him in 2004.
