City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside) returned from his overseas vacation this week to find his Queens home burglarized, the elected official said.
A next-door neighbor in Sunnyside called the councilman over the weekend to let him know that some doors and back windows were left open at his home. Upon returning, Van Bramer, whose district also includes Long Island City and Astoria, said he found his front door busted in by a crowbar and some property missing.
The councilman said somebody had broken into the home near 39th Avenue and rummaged through cabinets and closets before leaving the contents strewn about the floor. They made it out with a bike, some money and some of his mother’s jewelry, Van Bramer said.
The councilman said he was working with the 108th Precinct, which had reported a pattern of similar burglaries throughout the neighborhood. Van Bramer said he would be looking for ways to improve public safety in the district with hopes of curbing the trend.
