Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, who chairs the Assembly Education Committee, led 83 of her colleagues in the Assembly and State Senate in sending a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week calling for a $1.9 billion increase in school aid. The letter pointed out that school districts across the state have dealt with budget cuts over the last several years, with 90 percent of schools having less classroom operating aid than in 2008-09. These reductions, Nolan noted, have impacted programs such as art, music, tutoring, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and Advanced Placement courses. Nolan announced the letter at a press conference, during which she was joined by new Assemblywoman Maritza Davila and a host of other lawmakers.
