ELMHURST — An Elmhurst man was busted by police in the Bronx for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes and dodging more than $56,000 in taxes, the state Department of Taxation and Finance said.
Investigators seized 942 cartons of out-of-state cigarettes and $1,652 in cash from Hassan Aidibi, 39, who was charged with four felonies related to the untaxed sale of cigarettes, said the Department of Taxation, which announced the arrest.
Investigators believe the cigarettes came from six different states: Virginia, Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.
Aidibi could face a penalty ranging from $30 to $600 per carton, according to state tax law, and he is next due to appear in court March 11.
