After sitting abandoned and decaying for more than a decade, a defunct newsstand at the corner of Metropolitan Avenue and Fresh Pond Road on the Middle Village/Ridgewood border finally met its demise last Friday, Feb. 7. Crews tore down the one-story building, which had been left crumbling and marred by vandalism. Asbestos abatement began last fall in advance of the structure’s demolition. The land is owned by the MTA and is expected to be used in some capacity during the upcoming reconstruction of the bridge carrying Metropolitan Avenue and Fresh Pond Road over the Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk branch. The former newsstand site is pictured surrounded by fencing covered with green tarp.
