An NYPD detective was charged with shooting his partner in the wrist and then driving under the influence of alcohol to Jamaica Hospital early Wednesday, the Queens district attorney’s office said.
Detective Jay Poggi, 58, was arraigned on a charge of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and released on his own recognizance, the DA said.
A call to Poggi’s attorney was not immediately returned.
Poggi had allegedly taken out his Smith and Wesson revolver and was showing the gun’s hammer to his partner, Detective Matthew Sullivan, when the revolver fired, striking Sullivan in the right wrist, according to a criminal complaint filed by the DA’s office.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the detectives were inside an unmarked police vehicle parked on Crossbay Boulevard and 165th Avenue in Howard Beach at the time.
Poggi then allegedly drove his injured partner to Jamaica Hospital around 1:30 a.m., the complaint said.
An Internal Affairs Bureau sergeant who went to the hospital to investigate the incident said Poggi allegedly had bloodshot eyes and the strong smell of alcohol on his breath, the complaint said.
A field sobriety test administered to him allegedly read .113 percent blood alcohol content, which is above the legal limit of .08 percent in New York state, according to the court document.
Poggi was then taken to the 112th Precinct, where he allegedly refused to take a breath test, the complaint said.
Poggi is scheduled to return to court June 16, the DA said.
