Shuttles may come to Queens College

By Alex Robinson

Commuting Queens College students may soon have a new way to get to school.

Last week, the Flushing college’s student body voted in favor of creating a new shuttle program that will pick students up at two Long Island Rail Road stations and bring them to campus.

“It’s going to open up a lot of windows for students who live in the city,” said Matthew Louie, president of the college’s student association.

The shuttle will run every 15 minutes and transport students from the Flushing-Main Street and Jamaica stations to the school’s main campus, at 65-30 Kissena Blvd.

“It’s a direct route and a more comfortable ride,” Louie said. “It brings you right to the college.”

It will cost all of the college’s students $40 per semester in student activity fees, regardless of whether they use the service, Louie said. The school had 18,974 students enrolled in fall 2013.

The plan, which Louie hopes will start this fall, still needs to be approved by the school’s board of trustees at the end of June before it can be implemented.
